Everything you need to know about Fuel Log
General
Fuel Log is a free Swiss web application that allows you to track fuel consumption, maintenance costs and all expenses related to your vehicles. Available through a browser on smartphone, tablet and computer, Fuel Log works like a native app thanks to its PWA (Progressive Web App) technology. You can install it directly on your home screen without going through the App Store or Google Play Store.
Yes, Fuel Log is 100% free. You can manage up to 2 vehicles with unlimited history, track your fuel fill-ups, record your maintenance and view advanced statistics without paying a penny. The service is funded by discreet advertisements. If you wish to support the project, an optional donation (from CHF 12) removes the adverts and unlocks unlimited vehicles, for life.
Fuel Log supports all types of vehicles: petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric vehicles, motorcycles, utility vehicles and even E85-powered vehicles. For electric vehicles, you can record your charging sessions in kWh including charging duration and power. The app automatically calculates your consumption in L/100km or kWh/100km depending on the energy type.
Account & registration
Registration is simple and quick: go to fuellog.ch, click on "Sign Up" and enter your first name, surname, email address and a password. A confirmation email will be sent to verify your address. Once confirmed, you can log in and start adding your vehicles straight away. No credit card is required.
Absolutely! As Fuel Log is a web application, your data is synchronised automatically. Log in with the same account from your smartphone at the petrol station, your tablet at home or your computer at the office. All your data is accessible everywhere, in real time. You can even install the app on the home screen of each of your devices.
On the login page, click on "Forgotten password?" and enter your email address. You will receive a reset link valid for 1 hour. Click on the link in the email and choose a new password of at least 8 characters. If you do not receive the email, check your spam folder or contact us at admin@dstec.ch.
Vehicles
With the free version, you can manage up to 2 vehicles simultaneously. This is sufficient for most Swiss households. If you need more vehicles (large family, business fleet), a donation from CHF 12 unlocks unlimited vehicles for life. Vehicles can be of any type: petrol, diesel, electric, hybrid or E85.
Yes, the sharing feature allows you to invite other users to access a vehicle. This is ideal for couples, families or businesses where several people drive the same vehicle. Each user can then add their own fill-ups and maintenance records. To share, go to the vehicle details and use the "Share" function by entering the person's email address. They will receive an invitation by email.
You can mark a vehicle as "Sold / Inactive" in its settings. This preserves the entire history of fill-ups and maintenance for your records and tax declarations, but the vehicle will no longer appear in your active selection. You can also export all data as CSV or PDF before deactivating it. The inactive vehicle does not count towards your vehicle limit.
Fuel & fill-ups
From your dashboard or the Fill-ups page, click on "Add a fill-up". Enter the current mileage, the quantity in litres (or kWh for an electric vehicle), the total price and indicate whether it is a full or partial fill-up. Consumption is calculated automatically between two full fill-ups. You can also use geolocation to automatically record the petrol station.
Fuel Log calculates your actual consumption in L/100km (or kWh/100km for electric vehicles). The calculation is based on the distance travelled between two full fill-ups and the quantity of fuel added during the second fill-up. This is the most reliable method. For an accurate calculation, always fill up completely and note the exact mileage. Partial fill-ups are taken into account cumulatively but do not trigger a new consumption calculation.
Yes! Fuel Log offers an AI-powered photo scanning feature. For best results, photograph the pump display showing the 3 key values: litres, price per litre, and total amount. The AI automatically cross-validates these 3 values (litres × price/litre = total) to detect and correct any reading errors. You can also photograph your odometer. Before applying values, an editable preview lets you review and correct each field. Suspect values are highlighted in orange. This feature is available for supporters (donation from CHF 12).
Yes, Fuel Log supports the Swiss franc (CHF) and the euro (EUR). You can set your default currency in the settings and change the currency individually for each fill-up. This is particularly useful for cross-border commuters who fill up in France, Germany or Italy where prices are often different. All statistics are displayed in the currency of your choice.
Maintenance
Go to the Maintenance section and click on "Add maintenance". Choose a category (routine maintenance, tyres, brakes, MOT, repair, accessories, administrative), enter the date, mileage, a description and the cost. This way you will build up a complete maintenance history, valuable for reselling the vehicle or for your tax declarations.
Yes, Fuel Log offers configurable service intervals. For each type of maintenance (oil change, tyres, brakes, etc.), you can set an interval in kilometres and/or months. The app automatically alerts you when maintenance is due. You can also set a starting point if you have no previous history. Notifications are sent by email and by push notification in the browser.
Fuel Log offers 8 maintenance categories: Routine maintenance (oil change, filters, spark plugs), Tyres (tyres, balancing, alignment), Brakes (brake pads, discs, fluid), Vehicle inspection (cantonal inspection), Repair (mechanical, bodywork), Accessories (equipment, upgrades), Administrative (insurance, motorway vignette, taxes) and Other. Each maintenance entry can be supplemented with free-text notes for more detail.
Data & security
Your data is hosted in Switzerland, on servers provided by Infomaniak, a Swiss hosting company based in Geneva. Infomaniak is ISO 27001 certified and uses exclusively renewable energy. Your data never leaves Switzerland and is subject to Swiss data protection legislation (FADP), one of the strictest in the world.
Yes, Fuel Log complies with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as well as the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP). We only collect data strictly necessary for the operation of the service. Your data is never sold to third parties. You can export or delete your data at any time. A cookie consent banner allows you to control the cookies used.
Yes, Fuel Log allows you to export all your data at any time. You can download your vehicles, fill-ups and maintenance records in CSV format (compatible with Excel and LibreOffice) or generate a complete PDF report per vehicle or per year. The CSV export uses the semicolon separator for optimal compatibility with Swiss software. This is also useful for your tax declarations or when switching tools.
Yes, Fuel Log offers a flexible CSV import system. Prepare a CSV file with at least the Date and Mileage columns (Quantity, Price and Location columns are optional). The import accepts date formats DD.MM.YYYY and YYYY-MM-DD, and semicolon or comma separators. A preview allows you to verify the data before the final import.
Pricing & payment
Fuel Log uses a freemium model based on generosity. The application is entirely free and fully functional. If you wish to support us, a one-off donation from CHF 12 gives you lifetime benefits: removal of adverts and unlimited vehicles. You can pay by credit card (via Stripe), by IBAN bank transfer or by TWINT. Unlike a subscription, there is no automatic renewal.
We accept three payment methods: credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) via our partner Stripe for secure online payment, bank transfer IBAN (CH82 0900 0000 1660 4210 6, PostFinance) and TWINT (to +41 71 526 61 16).
